evaluation

My magazine stays within the lines and conventions of what other magazines in the same genre conform to. By sticking to the rules and conventions of magazines of a similar genre I have produced something that conforms with how other magazines are produced. Obviously there are some rules that fall under the codes and conventions like having a masthead and a grab line somewhere on the page, by having a photo that grabs your attention on the front cover it makes it more attractive to the consumer and lets them have an insight in to what the magazine is about.
The contents page stay’s within the rules and codes of a lot of other magazines and just in general with and overview of what is actually in the magazine it lets the reader know what page to turn to before they have even got into the magazine properly so they can read what they want to read rather that flapping through the magazine looking for what they want.
The double page spread again is similar to others that are in circulation at this current time with a bold title to show the reader what the article is about and another photo of what the article is about. It all blends together so the reader can flip from one column to another and then not have to worry with a sub-title to let the reader know a bit more about what the article is going to be about!
For the front cover I used a picture that was related to the main article in the magazine much like a lot of other magazines and then inside is another picture relating to the same article so the front cover and the double page spread have a correlation.

So that the readers know what the magazine is about it does have a stereotypical looking DJ on the front cover on so that people know what the magazine is going to be about if the picture was totally irrelevant to what the magazine was about then would be no point in having a photo on the front cover. Using a text that looks slightly techno people will have even more of an insight in to what the magazine is about. The person on the front of my magazine Is a young DJ the photo was taken with him at the decks playing his music with all the equipment in focus as well as him it lets the reader see what he is doing. By having quite a dark looking front cover it fits in with the magazine and the genre. It lets people that might have never picked up a Dubstep magazine before see what it is all about. The person on the front cover looks tired and possibly been dancing as its hard and fast music so there is no sitting down.

If my magazine was going to be published and distributed then I think that it would be IPCmedia looking at their portfolio they have lots of very similar publications and also magazines that are similar to the sort of magazine that I have made e.g. NME and other such massive publications. IPCmedia publish magazines from NUTS to SUPERYACHT one caters for a very broad audience and another one for a niche audience this is perfect for my magazine as Dubstep is quite a niche genre of music at the moment and then as it expanded it could be published more and more and marketed right.
If there was going to be any advertising I think that the companies that would want to advertise in DUBMAGNET would produce equipment for the DJ’s and recording studios that would want new Dubstep bands or solo artists to produce their singles or albums also for new and upcoming artists there would be adverts for venues for new artists to play at so they could get a foot in the door, and also gigs that are coming up so the reader can go and see some of the music that they are listening to, I think going down these routes would create suitable revenue to keep producing the magazine.

As my magazine is of quite a niche genre people might only pick the magazine up if they knew what was inside the magazine they would not just pick it up if they were not aware of the genre the demographic that it would appeal to would be young male audience between 15 – 30 although most of the audience would be male there will be some females that like the music so the magazine would have to be pretty straight and no bias to females.
If people were to buy the magazine they would use it to further their knowledge of the music and find out what is new and what people are listening to and what is good and new, they would also use it to find out what new gigs and any new venues that have opened up and what is going on.

A large Masthead is used to attract the attention of the reader with a big grab line and side headers to get the reader to pick up the magazine in the first place and a photo on the front cover draws the reader into the front cover.

While shooting this the photos for this magazine it showed me how to use a camera and not just pointing and clicking it showed me that you have to take time and compose what you want to have on the front of your magazine. Not only did we learn how to use a camera we used Photoshop and I used Illustrator to compose the magazine while Photoshop was strictly to edit the images. To finally compose the magazine I had to use layers in illistrator and in Photoshop edit the images to sometimes make them look brighter or to take some of the photo out of focus.

I think going from my preliminary task to the final one I have made significant changes to the magazine but there are obviously similarities between them that fall under the codes and conventions part of making a magazine. Overall I feel that the final product is a lot more mature as a magazine compared to the preliminary task.
